To complement my covered notebooks and sketchbooks I also make disperse dyed pen cases which are sold containing a set of pens. The cases are fully lined and the cover images are created with heat transfer disperse dyes. The technique uses thin papers washed with dyes and left to dry. For these designs, I then used some small ferns which were laid onto the fabric and then the dyed papers were placed colour side down over the top. A domestic iron was used on the back of the papers to heat transfer the dye from the paper to the fabric. The dye also colours the back of the ferns so for the next stage, I flipped the ferns over, laying them coloured side down onto a new fabric, Then a dyed paper in a contrasting colour was placed over the top and the whole thing was ironed again to transfer the dyed background and coloured ferns to the fabric.
